Sweet Pea’s Brulee – Portland

When life gives you diabetes, make crème brûlée. That’s exactly what owners of food cart Sweet Pea’s Brulee do nearly every day. Co-owner Tim Bergam was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes four years ago. As a way to cope with his new disease, Bergam and his wife, Kate Serpa, began making crème brûlée for friends. “I couldn’t eat our products, but we could feel the joy in serving people sweets which were loved,” says Bergam. As the requests piled in for them to make desserts for luncheons, dinners and parties, a friend suggested they start selling them. Serpa had spent …Read the Rest

Portland Saturday Market Food

While we were out visiting my family in Portland, Oregon back in October, there were two destinations in the city that we knew we couldn’t miss. One was Powell’s City of Books, the largest independent bookstore in the country, housing new and used books in a several-story building that takes …Read the Rest

Whole Bowl – Portland

As Sunset Magazine recently pointed out, Portland is becoming known for its fabulous food carts. I personally love the whole food cart experience. It’s the closest you can get to buying a cooked treat on a beach in Bali without leaving the state. It makes a person feel international or …Read the Rest

LITTLE BLUE WAFFLE WAGON

When Cameo Cafe in Northwest Portland closed, newly unemployed servers Emmy Ervin and Andrea Hawk wasted no time plotting their future in breakfast food. They found a tiny travel trailer and a somewhat larger patch of gravel on Southeast Division Street, then last month opened a classically Portland-quirky waffle outlet …Read the Rest

Best Eats at Portland Area Farmers Markets

The French term cuisine du marché translates roughly as “cooking from the market,” and it’s an apt term for how many of us in Portland cook and eat — local, seasonal, spanking fresh. Get to a market early and you can catch some of Portland’s best chefs prowling the aisles …Read the Rest

Brunchbox

It’s no wonder that Brunchbox has 100+ reviews and 4.5 star average…I can personally attest to the fact that the “Youcanhascheeseburger” special is worth the hype. Truth be told, it’s more of a “patty melt” than a “burger” since the beef patty is sandwiched in between 2 grilled cheeses on …Read the Rest

SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS POUTINE? Have a seat in one of Potato Champion’s rainbow-colored plastic lawn chairs, and that’s a question you’ll hear repeated again and again, though at times it’s drowned out by the sounds of ’70s classic rock, the sizzle of deep-frying spuds, and the antics of the …Read the Rest
